HAMILTON: England’s batting stalwart Joe Root continued to make waves in Test cricket as he broke legendary Pakistani batter Javed Miandad’s 31-year-old record on Tuesday.

Root, who scored 84 runs across two innings in England’s gut-wrenching 423-run defeat in the third Test against New Zealand, surpassed Miandad’s record of scoring the most runs in Tests against Blackcaps.

The Englishman has now scored 1,925 runs against New Zealand, six more than Miandad’s tally of 1,919 runs.

Root, who also holds the record of scoring the most Test runs against India (2,846), became only the second batter after Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara to score the most runs against two different nations.

The legendary Sri Lankan batter had scored 2,911 runs against Pakistan and 1,816 runs against Bangladesh.

Furthermore, Joe Root also became the first player to score thousand runs in New Zealand, with his tally currently standing at 1,006 runs, while he has also scored the most half-centuries by a visiting batter in the country.

On the other hand, New Zealand, despite losing the three-match series 2-1, registered an astounding record as they became the first team to win a Test by more than 300 runs after losing the previous match by a similar margin.

Remember, New Zealand defeated England by a mammoth 423 runs in the final match of the three-match Test series at the Seddon Park here on Tuesday.

Chasing an improbable target of 658 runs, England’s hopes of a clean sweep were shattered as they were bowled out for 234 after lunch on day four.
