CENTURION: Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam etched his name in the record books during the ongoing Boxing Day Test against South Africa at the SuperSport Park.
The 30-year-old achieved a remarkable feat, becoming only the 12th Pakistan batter to score 4000 runs in Test cricket.
Babar, who was just three runs away from the milestone, struck a boundary on the very first ball of his innings, bringing up the 4000-run mark.
As of now, he has accumulated 4001 runs in 56 Test matches.
Former captain Younis Khan holds the record for the most Test runs by a Pakistan batter, with an impressive total of 10,099 runs from 118 Test matches.
This milestone isn’t the only one Babar has achieved in his illustrious career.
He now becomes the third player in cricket history to score 4000 runs across all three formats – Test, ODI and T20I.
Indian cricket icons Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are the other two members of this elite club.
It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan's batting struggled on Day one of the first Test against South Africa, ending the morning at 88/4.
After being asked to bat, they were reduced to 36/4 before lunch.
Shan Masood (17), Saim Ayub (14) and Babar Azam (4) all fell to the aggressive South African pacers.
Saud Shakeel made a brief impact with three boundaries but was dismissed for 14.
Kamran Ghulam (23) and Mohammad Rizwan (10) fought hard to stabilize the innings, but Pakistan remained in deep trouble at the break.
