Former opener Imran Nazir declared the Pakistan cricket team as “cowards” as the Green Shirts’ chances of making it to the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 now linger on other Group A results.
Pakistan lost to the United States (USA) in their first match of the T20 World Cup in Dallas after a thrilling Super Over. In the second match against India in New York, the Babar Azam-led unit couldn’t chase down the 120-run target and ended up losing.
They won their third match against Canada but things are no longer in their hands as in order to qualify for the last eight, the Men in Green need other results of Group A in their favour.
Nazir wasn’t happy with the way Pakistan have played in the tournament and declared them “cowards". He also added that there are no excuses in cricket as you have to play no matter the conditions.
“I am sorry, but I am compelled to say that cricket is a game of the fearless. I haven’t witnessed anyone as cowardly as this team,” Nazir said while talking on Geo News.
“I frequently discuss what new excuse they will be concocting now. There are no excuses in cricket. Irrespective of the pitch or conditions you are encountering, you are obligated to play.”
Pakistan will be facing Ireland on Sunday (June 16) at the Central Broward Regional Park.
The path to the Super 8s for the Pakistan is tough but not impossible.
The following results of Group A teams will ensure Pakistan’s qualification in the Super 8s stage of the T20 World Cup 2024:
June 14: USA vs Ireland: — Ireland win
June 15: Canada vs India — India win
June 16: Ireland vs Pakistan — Pakistan win
If all of the above-mentioned matches give the same results as listed then Pakistan will have four points in four games. India will have eight and the USA will have the same points as the Green Shirts. Canada and Ireland will have two points each at the end of the group-stage games.
Even then, Pakistan will need to register a win against Ireland with a big margin to improve their Net Run Rate (NRR) as their points will be the same as the USA so NRR will most probably come into play.
Moreover, Green Shirts and Pakistan fans need to hope that the USA lose their last match against Ireland and it doesn't get washed out due to rain.
