CHENNAI: In the aftermath of Pakistan's loss to Afghanistan in ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023, all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed addressed the media, expressing his concerns over the team's performance, particularly in bowling and fielding.
Iftikhar Ahmed did not mince words as he evaluated Pakistan's performance. He began by acknowledging the issues faced by their spinners, saying, "Our spinners could not perform impressively."
Furthermore, Iftikhar expressed his dissatisfaction with Pakistan's bowling performance and regarded it as one of the best in the world.
"Our bowling is world number one but it is not performing as per expectations."
The all-rounder acknowledged that every team faces periods of difficulty, saying, "Ups and downs happen with the team; our downs are going on at the moment."
Iftikhar Ahmed remained optimistic about the team's future, saying, "We have effort in our hands, and we will try our best to lift ourselves." This determination reflects the team's commitment to addressing the issues they've identified.
"This time was more than 300 runs." Acknowledging the need for improvement, he added, "Bowlers know we have to improve as a batting unit."
While reflecting on the defeat, Iftikhar Ahmed recognised the impact on the team's morale, noting, "Every team's morale goes down when they are beaten. Afghanistan played good cricket against us today; give them credit."
Looking ahead, Iftikhar Ahmed expressed confidence, saying, "We have the ability to bounce back." He also reiterated the team's commitment to securing a spot in the top four. "We will try to win all the matches and enter the top four."
It must be noted that the Hashmatullah-led side became the first Afghanistan side to claim a win over the Men in Green. This is now their second win of the tournament since they beat England previously.
