The national selection committee, led by Wahab Riaz, named all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz as the replacement of spinner Noman Ali for the ongoing Test series against Australia.

Noman was ruled out of the three-Test match series after being diagnosed with acute appendicitis. He also underwent a surgery today.

The 29-year-old left-arm spinner Nawaz, who is already part of the 17-member T20I squad against New Zealand beginning from 12 January in New Zealand, will leave for Australia on the first available flight.

Nawaz has claimed 16 wickets in six Tests for Pakistan.

“It is really unfortunate that Noman Ali is not available for the Test matches. Due to logistical challenges, including visa issues for any new player, and considering the requirement for a left-arm spinner, Nawaz was the best available choice for the side,” Wahab Riaz, chief selector men’s cricket team, said.

Additionally, the team management is hopeful that spinner Abrar Ahmed, who missed the first Test due to severe pain in his right leg around his knee, will be available to the side for the third Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, starting from 3 January 2024.

Earlier, pacer Khurram Shazad was also ruled out of the remaining Tests of the series due to a stress fracture in his left 10th rib, as well as an abdominal muscle tear.

“Shahzad complained of discomfort in his left side during the first Test. PCB will now consult a specialist in Australia after which a final management protocol will be established for the player,” the PCB said.

“He will then return to the NCA in Lahore where he will continue his injury management and rehabilitation,” it added.

The right-armer made his debut during the Perth Test and claimed five wickets during the match.

It must be noted that the second Test between Pakistan and Australia will begin on 26 December in Melbourne.
