The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday provided an update on mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed confirming that the 24-year-old will not participate in the Melbourne Test.

Abrar bowled a total of 27 overs during the four-day practice match against the PM XI where he also picked up a wicket. At the end of the third day, he complained about feeling some discomfort in his right leg for which the MRI was done.

“Abrar Ahmed’s symptoms have significantly improved, and he has started bowling at 50 per cent intensity,” the PCB said in a brief press release.

“Although he has worked really well since his diagnosis in Canberra, he still is not 100 per cent asymptomatic.

“Considering the nature of the injury and the workload required from a spinner in a Test match, Abrar is not yet ready and will therefore not be available for the second Test.

“He will undergo a preliminary fitness test on 25 December, which will determine his probable return-to-play date.”

Off-spinner Sajid Khan was called up as Abrar’s replacement before the first Test, which Pakistan lost, and he is likely to play in Melbourne as Shan Masoon-led unit will look forward to registering a Test win on Australian for the first time since 1995.

Earlier today, spinner Nouman Ali was ruled out of the Test series against Australia due to acute appendicitis.

Left-arm bowler Mohammad Nawaz was named Nouman’s replacement as the 29-year-old will leave for Australia on the first available flight.

It must be noted pacer Khurram Shazad was also ruled out of the remaining Tests of the series due to a stress fracture in his left 10th rib, as well as an abdominal muscle tear.

“Shahzad complained of discomfort in his left side during the first Test. PCB will now consult a specialist in Australia after which a final management protocol will be established for the player,” the PCB said.

“He will then return to the NCA in Lahore where he will continue his injury management and rehabilitation,” it added.

The right-armer made his debut during the Perth Test and claimed five wickets during the match.

It must be noted that the second Test between Pakistan and Australia will begin on 26 December in Melbourne.
