One of the best wrestlers of all time, CM Punk, wrestled his first match since his surprising return to the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) after nearly a decade away from the company.

Punk entered the ring to face Dominick Mysterio during a WWE live house show at Madison Square Garden in New York City, entertaining a packed crowd for the traditional day-after-Christmas event.

The sold-out audience erupted with cheers when Punk's entrance music played, and chants of "You still got it" echoed through the venue during the match.

Punk secured his first victory back in a WWE ring by executing his finishing move, the 'GTS' or 'Go to Sleep,' followed by a pinfall in the centre of the ring.

Prior to Tuesday night, the 45-year-old Punk had not participated in a match since September when he faced Samoa Joe at All Elite Wrestling's (AEW) All Out Pay-Per-View in London, England, before being released from the company. Amidst speculation, Punk returned to WWE at November's Survivor Series event and has been regularly featured on TV in recent weeks.

The Best in the World also made an appearance during a Premium Live Event for WWE's developmental brand NXT a few weeks ago, leaving fans curious about which main brand he would eventually join - Raw, Smackdown, or NXT.

Punk's departure from WWE in 2014 was controversial, citing creative frustrations and dissatisfaction with the lack of medical care provided to him at the time.

Debuting in 2006, Punk quickly became a fan favourite and one of the biggest stars in the WWE universe. His last appearance was in a Royal Rumble match in 2014.
