One of the greatest WWE wrestlers of all time, John Cena, took a trip into the past as he recalled one of his most memorable clashes against Rob Van Dam at EWC: One Night Stand 2006.
The crowd was against Cena before the match even began, so much that when The Champ threw his shirt into the crowd, it was thrown back at him multiple times.
The fight was going viciously as both wrestlers gave their all and didn’t give in throughout the match. As Cena started to get the better of his counterpart after a long time, he was speared by an unknown person wearing a motorcycle helmet, that person was Edge, who also ended up knocking the referee out.
After Cena went down following Edge’s spear, Van Dam executed his traditional move and finished the job. Since there was no referee in the ring, Paul Heyman rushed to the scene and got the job done. Just like that, Van Dam emerged victorious.
Cena recalled the moment in a video posted on his TikTok account where he called the clash against Van Dam the “most talked about” in his career.
“Okay! So, here’s a moment that’s probably most talked about in my career in WWE, EWC: One Night Stand. Hammerstein Ballroom against Rob Van Dam where I had a championship match against Rob and an additional match with my t-shirt,” Cena said.
“Now, I knew the crowd was gonna be hostile, but hostile does not even describe the atmosphere in the Hammerstein Ballroom. They loved Rob, they hated me, and this was probably the peak of the polarization that would leak into the WWE for years when you hear the word, John Cena, it was either he sucks or he is my guy and there was no one in this building saying he’s my guy.
“Rob and I went back and forth and you see kind of a non-virtuous side here where I begin to push the boundaries of good and evil shall we say because I was trying everything and it seemed like the world was against me and it indeed was.
“Rob’s talent absolutely shows in this match but the world right here is against me as I’m speared through a table by Darth Vader a.k.a. my arch-nemesis Edge.
“So Rob gets a championship moment which is fantastic and Edge and I go on to do some incredible things in the future WWE
“What a night at the Hammerstein Ballroom, no one would ever call this to happen,” he concluded.
