Matteo Berrettini cannot catch a break from never-ending injuries as the Italian withdrew from the Australian Open 2024 on Sunday.

Berrettini, 27, sustained a right foot injury that forced him to pull out of the first slam of 2024.

In the opening round of the tournament, Berrettini found himself pitted against fellow Grand Slam finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas, promising one of the most intriguing first-round clashes at this year's Australian Open.

However, Belgian Zizou Bergs will now step in as a fortunate replacement to face the Greek player.

Berrettini has been grappling with persistent injuries for over 12 months. Although he initially withdrew from Brisbane International in 2024, there were hopes for his recovery when he made the journey to Melbourne.

Many anticipated his readiness for the first-round match, assuming that he wouldn't undertake such a long trip only to withdraw.

As per the official statement from the tournament organisers, Berrettini is contending with a right foot injury, leading to his withdrawal from the competition, joining Rafael Nadal in missing the tournament.

The Italian is now focused on recuperation, aiming for a swift return to action. His preferred segment of the season is undeniably the grass-court period, which is still a considerable distance away, affording him ample time for recovery.

Tsitsipas will now face the lucky loser, Zizou Bergs, who steps in to replace the Italian in the main draw, presenting a more manageable draw for the Greek player, who has also faced injury challenges at the beginning of the 2024 season.

This matchup will be the second fixture during the day session on the Rod Laver Arena on Day 2, following the match between Coco Gauff and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
