Al-Ettifaq are unlikely to approve the departure of Jordan Henderson in January, despite interest from Ajax and Juventus, as the former Liverpool captain looks to return to Europe.

According to Mirror Football, Ajax is leading the race to sign Henderson, who hopes to leave Saudi Arabia less than six months after his £12 million move to Steven Gerrard's team in July.

The England international has struggled to adjust to life in the Middle East, facing challenges with the heat and humidity of playing conditions. Additionally, Al-Ettifaq's average attendance of 7,800 has been disappointing.

However, the 33-year-old is now expected to remain at Al-Ettifaq until at least the end of the season. Henderson flew to Abu Dhabi on Sunday with Al-Ettifaq for a two-week winter training camp, and club officials are likely to make it clear that they are not open to business with any potential suitors.

Henderson has made 19 appearances for Al-Ettifaq, who have gone nine matches without a win since October. This poor form has increased pressure on Gerrard, with the Dammam-based team currently eighth in the Saudi Pro League table, 28 points behind leaders Al-Hilal.

The first half of the season has been challenging for Henderson, who is in "serious" talks about a move to Ajax as his future remains uncertain. Before his team's game with Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday, Ajax coach John van 't Schip told ESPN: "There is serious talk going on with Henderson.

"He still has some things to arrange in Saudi Arabia. It could be a nice match. It's no secret that we could really use that type of player. Other guys can benefit from that."

Henderson has two-and-a-half years left on his contract at Al-Ettifaq, and the Saudis are also concerned that allowing the midfielder to leave would send a negative message about their league as they try to attract more players. Demarai Gray and Georginio Wijnaldum are among the other prominent names currently at Al-Ettifaq.

A return to Europe would enhance Henderson's chances of being included in Gareth Southgate's England squad for this summer's Euros. Southgate has maintained faith in Henderson for recent matches, but playing at a higher level would increase his prospects of participating in the tournament in Germany.
