The pressure will now be on Manchester City to respond to their title rivals. Pep Guardiola's reigning champions are involved in arguably the game of the weekend at home to Chelsea.
Elsewhere, Newcastle United drew at home to Bournemouth, Aston Villa battled to a 2-1 victory at Fulham, and Tottenham lost by the same scoreline at home to Wolves, with all three games potentially key in the race for the UEFA Champions League places.
Manchester United do not play until Sunday when they travel to Luton Town.
Liverpool face Luton in the Premier League on Wednesday, then take on Chelsea in the League Cup final at Wembley on February 25.
They are also still competing in the FA Cup and Europa League.
