Bayer Leverkusen Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Fernando Carro confirmed the club’s stance on their manager Xabi Alonso’s future amid strong Bayern Munich and Liverpool rumours.
Liverpool and Bayern will be without a manager as Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel are set to leave their respective clubs at the end of the season and the two clubs have Alonso on top of their list to replace their current coaches.
Alonso’s Leverkusen is currently competing for the treble as his side has a decisive 10-point lead over Bayern in the league, they are in the DFB Pokal semi-final and will also take on West Ham United in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final.
Leverkusen’s CEO Carro confirmed that the club has a contract till 2026 with the Spaniard and they are eager to fulfil that as the German side is planning the next season with the former Real Madrid star.
“He has a contract until 2026 and we are planning the next season with him at full speed,” Carro told MARCA. “Nothing makes us think that he will not continue with us.
“On the coaching level, he is the number one in the world at the moment.”
Similarly, Leverkusen’s left-back Alejandro Grimaldo lauded Alonso saying that the Spaniard has “something special” as a manager as the German side is the only club in Europe that is yet to lose a match this season.
“It is something that we have not considered yet. He will know what decision to make. It is clear that I would like to continue improving alongside him,’ Grimaldo said in a separate interview with MARCA when asked about Alonso’s potential departure.
“I had very good coaches throughout my career, both at Barcelona and at Benfica. But Xabi is something special. There are not many coaches like him in the world of football.”
