Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by seven wickets in the 49th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday to go the eighth spot in the points table.
With the win, the Kings climbed to the eighth position in the IPL points table while CSK remained on fourth. However, if Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRK) win their upcoming match against Rajasthan Royals, they will replace CSK.
IPL 2024 points table
Jonny Bairstow (46 off 30) and Rilee Rossouw (43 off 23) made sure that their side chase down the 163-run target as soon as possible so they could improve their net run rate (NRR).
Their job was finished by Shashank Singh and skipper Sam Curran as the Kings chased the target in 18th over.
Meanwhile, in the first innings, Ruturaj Gaikwad once again played a captain knock scoring 62 runs on 48 balls courtesy of five fours and two sixes. However, he couldn’t get the required support from his batters as only Ajinkaya Rahane (29 off 24), Sameer Rizvi (21 off 23), Moeen Ali (15 off 9) and MS Dhoni (14 off 11) could provide valuable runs.
It must be noted that Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are the joint-most successful teams in the history of IPL as both sides have won the tournament five times each.
Other than these two, KKR won it twice, while Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Deccan Chargers managed to lift the title once each.
Despite having legendary shorter-format figures like Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers, Jacques Kallis and others, Royal Challengers Bangalore never managed to win the title despite playing the final thrice in 2009, 2011 and 2016.
