'England to not change approach despite World Cup 2023 debacle': Ben Duckett

England to play West Indies in first ODI on December 3

Ben Duckett opined that there's no requirement for England to alter their approach following their disappointing performance in the 2023 World Cup.

Led by Jos Buttler, the 2019 World Champions faced difficulties throughout the tournament held on Indian soil and were among the initial teams to be eliminated from the competition.

“I don’t think there’s going to be a new approach because of how the World Cup went. If they won that World Cup, the same group of players might have been here,” Duckett was quoted as saying in The Guardian.

“They had guys who were potentially in their late 30s and coming towards the end of their 50-over careers, so it seemed like there was always going to be a fresh start after it. We’re just a group of players who can go and showcase what we can do,” he stated.

England began their journey with a significant loss in their first match against New Zealand at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. Despite a victory against Bangladesh led by Shakib Al Hasan, their overall performance fell short of expectations.

Securing the seventh position in the table with six points and a net run rate of -0.572, England faced challenges. Duckett, a consistent member of their Test lineup in recent years, expressed his discomfort witnessing England's struggles in the World Cup.

“I watched every England game and it was tough to watch at times. I’m watching mates go out there and struggle. It was really difficult. I was playing with them a few weeks before, so it was tough. But we have watched how England have played over the past eight years and one bad five weeks does not define a team,” Duckett added.

Following the World Cup, England are on the tour of the West Indies. They will play three ODIs followed by five T20Is. Duckett has been selected for both the ODI and T20I squads.

The three ODIs are on December 3 and 6 in Antigua, and on December 9 in Barbados.
