Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp provided an injury update on midfielder Alexis Mac Allister as the midfielder has been sidelined with knee discomfort for a week.
The Reds prepare to take on Union Saint-Gilloise to conclude their UEFA Europa League group-stage run with a win but they will be without the World Cup winner as he continues to recover from his injury.
Klopp confirmed that the Argentinian’s knee was injured badly during Liverpool’s trip to Sheffield United on December 7 and the date of his return cannot be established yet.
"It's a bit more tricky than we thought at the first moment," Klopp told reporters of Mac Allister's issue. "The other boy stepped on his knee and the stud went through pretty much the muscle on to the bone.
"Now, we have to wait until the bone is healed and until Macca can deal with the pain, because it is pretty painful. Macca is actually a super-tough guy so we have probably to make sure just from an infection point of view nothing happens. That's really important.”
The German international then talked about his injury saying that none of his players ever had such a bruise. But he hoped that the Argentinian would make noticeable progress in the upcoming days.
"I never had this injury for one of my players before but now we have it.,” he added. “I hope it will not take that long, I would like to say it's day by day - but that would look like he could maybe play the next game but he will not be ready for that as well. I hope the next three or four days he makes big steps and then we will see."
Liverpool, with 12 points from five matches, have secured the top spot in Group E and can finish their group-stage journey with 15 points should they win on Thursday night.
