Chelsea rebounded impressively after a resounding defeat to Everton earlier in the week, securing a 2-0 victory against Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League (PL) on Saturday.
Sheffield currently finds themselves at the bottom of the PL points table with only two wins, and Chelsea capitalized on the opportunity to secure what seemed like the easiest points they would earn this season.
Although Chelsea had a shaky start and struggled to convert their chances in the first half, head coach Mauricio Pochettino made strategic position changes just before the second half, yielding positive results just 16 minutes into the final 45 minutes.
Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson found the net in the 54th and 61st minutes, respectively, making things more comfortable for Pochettino. The head coach has been under intense scrutiny due to Chelsea's subpar performances this season.
"I’m very pleased," Pochettino told BBC Match of the Day. "The performance was good. It’s always good against a team who play aggressively with a low block.
"In the second half we changed the position of Palmer and Raheem Sterling, we tried to put Palmer and [Mykhailo] Mudryk in a better position in front of goal.
"I’m confident, even when we lose. I really believe in the players and the club. Now it’s about to use that in the next competition in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup."
It is worth mentioning that Chelsea signed 13 players during the summer but Pochettino has struggled to get his side to play a consistent brand of football. Despite today’s win, they still only have six wins and seven losses in 17 matches in the league.
While the win over Sheffield is a positive step, Chelsea must build on this momentum to establish a winning streak. With aspirations for European football by the end of the season, Pochettino and his squad need to address the issues that have hindered their consistency so far.
