Former world No 2 Alex Corretja made an astonishing prediction about Carlos Alcaraz, saying that the Spaniard will win Grand Slams on all surfaces in his career due to his never-ending ambition and character.
Alcaraz, 20, emerged as one of the best players in the world and already has two Grand Slams — US Open and Wimbledon — to his name. However, he is still missing the Australian Open and Roland Garros from his impressive CV, and Corretja believes that the Spaniard will aim to achieve victory in Paris in 2024.
Alcaraz played the French Open semi-final last year against Novak Djokovic, he was off to a great start but suffered cramps and ended up losing the tie.
“To me, winning a Grand Slam would make it a very good season,” he said on Eurosport. “I think that this year, for example, Roland Garros is going to be a very big goal for him.
“After what happened last year [cramps against Djokovic], I think he will manage it differently. He will have less anxiety and he’ll be wanting to get to Paris to win, because he knows that it is a very long Grand Slam.”
Corretja backed Alcaraz to win all four Grand Slams and even the Masters as he believes that the 20-year-old possesses the quality to dominate future events.
“I’ve said it a long time ago, I think Alcaraz is going to win all the Grand Slams on all surfaces, even the Masters,” he added.
“I think he is going to be a player who is going to win all the titles practically possible and it is because of the way he plays, his ambition, and his character.
“I think his tennis is very high. So it seems to me that Alcaraz is destined to be one of the special ones.”
It must be noted that Alcaraz will begin the 2024 campaign in January at the Australian Open, but he will be without his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, who is recovering from an arthroscopy on his left knee due to which he will not be able to travel alongside the rising star.
He is to remain on the sidelines and will join Alcaraz in the Masters 1000 in Indiana Wells from March 6 to 17.
