Chris Wood netted a hat-trick upon his return to St James' Park as Nottingham Forest concluded a seven-game winless streak with an impressive Premier League triumph against Newcastle.

The outcome propels Forest to 16th place in the table, securing a five-point gap from the bottom three teams prior to Tuesday's additional fixtures.

Newcastle has now suffered 16 Premier League Boxing Day defeats, the highest among all sides. It marks the Magpies' 47th such loss in English league history, establishing a record for any club.

Other notable statistics

This marked Newcastle's inaugural Premier League loss against Nottingham Forest (W7 D3), having secured victories in each of their prior five home encounters with Forest in the competition.

It was only the second instance where Nottingham Forest conceded first and subsequently triumphed in a Premier League away match, following their 3-1 victory over Leeds in April 1996.

Forest's Chris Wood became the seventh player to secure a hat-trick in the Premier League on Boxing Day. He stands as the first to achieve this since Harry Kane's treble against Southampton for Tottenham in 2017.

Wood also became the fourth player to score a Premier League hat-trick against a team he had previously played for in the competition.

Anthony Elanga has assisted Chris Wood on four occasions in the Premier League this season. Only Steve Stone (5 for Bryan Roy in 1994-95) and Bryan Roy (7 for Stan Collymore in 1994-95) have ever provided more assists for a single teammate in a season in the competition for Forest.
