As Real Madrid prepare to face Sevilla in La Liga on Sunday night, they will warmly receive a former captain and club legend, Sergio Ramos, at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Ramos had a distinguished career at Real Madrid, amassing 671 appearances, scoring 101 goals, and securing numerous trophies, including four UEFA Champions League titles.
The 37-year-old departed the Merengues as a free agent in 2021, moving to PSG, where he spent two years before returning to Spain last summer by joining Sevilla.
Now, Ramos is ready to grace the pitch at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, eagerly anticipating the moment of returning to his former stomping grounds as a defender.
“I’m going to feel at home because I’ve spent so many years there, with the most important moments of my career and I have wonderful memories of the fans and my teammates. It will be a unique and emotional moment,” he said to DAZN (h/t AS).
The Spanish legend then acknowledged that his former club goes into the game as favourites, as they are in a good moment, and supported them to win all possible titles this season.
“Real Madrid are favourites to win everything every year. They’re going through a good moment, they’re at the top and they have players of extraordinary quality,” said Ramos.
“We know very well the ground we are going to walk on and we will try to play a good game there.”
Ramos then made it clear that he would not be celebrating if he managed to score a goal against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu out of respect for his former club and the fans.
“I have a lot of respect for the fans and for the whole of Real Madrid and if I score, I won’t celebrate, but if I’m lucky enough to do so and that goal helps us to win, I’ll be delighted because those three points will be very useful for us,” he remarked.
Ramos also opened up on the previous meeting between the two sides, which ended in a 1-1 draw at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, saying:
“We played Madrid toe-to-toe. We had a chances to win. Kepa saved a very good header that would have given us the victory. Sevilla, when we’re compact, we’re all on the same page and we put in a lot of intensity, we show that we’re a guerrilla team.”
As Ramos prepares to make his comeback to the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid is reportedly preparing a special tribute for their former captain.
It will be nothing short of what Ramos deserves, considering he dedicated 16 years of his best to the club and played a crucial role in the team's achievements.
