In a recent development, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued notice in response to a petition filed by citizen Hafiz Sikandar Humayun, challenging the appointment of Zaka Ashraf as the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee.
The petitioner, a lawyer by profession, contends that Ashraf's appointment was made on political grounds, which is in violation of the constitution.
The hearing of the petition took place before Justice Shakeel Ahmed at the Lahore High Court, where Humayun argued that Ashraf, the leader of a political party, was appointed to the PCB Management Committee based on political affiliations, which breaches the constitutional principles.
The petitioner further highlighted that the Election Commission of Pakistan had previously issued directives to cease political appointments in various organisations, including the PCB. Humayun insisted that Ashraf's appointment did not align with these guidelines.
In his plea, the petitioner requested the Lahore High Court to declare Ashraf's appointment as PCB Management Committee Chairman null and void.
It must be noted that Ashraf was appointed as the chairman of the PCB Management Committee in July 2023.
Earlier, the Ministry for Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) had also asked the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Management Committee to submit details of all the activities, failure to conduct chairman’s election and the appointments made during these months.
The tenure of the PCB Management Committee will expire on November 4 following which a new committee is expected to take over the board’s reins.
