Inter Miami's transfer activity ahead of the upcoming season might not be complete as Lionel Messi reached out to fellow Argentine Marcos Rojo to discuss his future.
The Major League Soccer (MLS) side is keen on bolstering their squad before the season opener on February 21.
Miami already secured the signings of Messi's former teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, and most recently, Luis Suarez. These acquisitions are aimed at supporting the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner in the team.
Reports from Continental 590 radio in Argentina reveal that both Messi and head coach Tata Martino contacted Marcos Rojo to gauge his interest in joining Miami. Rojo, currently playing for Argentine giants Boca Juniors, is under contract until December 2025.
While Rojo hasn't been Messi's teammate in Barcelona, they have shared the international stage numerous times. With 61 caps for Argentina and experience in two World Cups, Rojo brings valuable international experience.
At 33, Rojo left Manchester United in 2021 after a seven-year spell, and some believed his high-profile football career was winding down. Despite currently playing for Boca Juniors, one of the biggest teams in South America, a move to Miami might be tempting for the defender.
Miami, having secured Luis Suarez from Brazilian side Gremio in December, is determined to strengthen their squad for the 2024 MLS season.
Rojo is identified as a key target, and his addition would provide defensive stability and a threat from set pieces, complementing the attacking prowess of Messi and Suarez.
With Messi and Suarez leading the attack, Busquets controlling the midfield, and Alba contributing as an attacking full-back, Inter Miami aim to dominate the MLS in the upcoming season. Rojo's potential arrival adds further depth to the team's defensive capabilities.
Earlier, it was reported that Messi would miss about seven matches next season due to his commitment with Argentina.
The Copa America is scheduled for this summer, spanning June and July, where Messi aims to assist Argentina in securing another major title following their World Cup triumph in 2022.
