Boca Juniors defender and former teammate of Lionel Messi, Marcos Rojo, responded to transfer rumours about Inter Miami, hinting that he would complete his current contract with the Argentinian club.
At the end of the year 2023, Rojo took to his Instagram account where he showed gratitude for spending one more year at the South American club and then hinted at staying at the club for one more year.
“One more year together goes and may this 2024 be much better for all of us,” Rojo posted on Instagram.
As per Argentinian newspaper La Nacion, Rojo with with Juniors’ president Juan Roman Riquelme and informed him about the offer from the United States, after which the president asked him to stay as he is one of the most important players in the squad.
Messi had already convinced his previous teammates Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez to join him at the American club but he couldn’t do that to his former Argentinian teammate.
Rojo was identified as a key target, and his addition would have provided defensive stability and a threat from set pieces, complementing the attacking prowess of Messi and Suarez.
With Messi and Suarez leading the attack, Busquets controlling the midfield, and Alba contributing as an attacking full-back, Inter Miami aim to dominate the MLS in the upcoming season. Rojo's arrival would have added further depth to the team's defensive capabilities.
While Rojo hasn't been Messi's teammate in Barcelona, they have shared the international stage numerous times. With 61 caps for Argentina and experience in two World Cups, Rojo would have been a key addition to Miami’s squad which is in dire need of an experienced leader at the back.
Earlier, it was reported that Messi would miss about seven matches next season due to his commitment with Argentina.
The Copa America is scheduled for this summer, spanning June and July, where Messi aims to assist Argentina in securing another major title following their World Cup triumph in 2022.
