England’s spinner Shoaib Bashir created a record on day two of the fourth Test against India which is being played at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi.

Bashir had figures of 4-83 and bowled a total of 31 overs on day two, which became the longest spell bowled by an English bowler since Graeme Swann, who took 6-90 against New Zealand in Leeds in 2013.

Furthermore, it also became the longest spell by any bowler in a Test in India since 2005, when legendary Indian spinner Anil Kumble bowled 38 overs against Pakistan and took 7-63.

India found themselves trailing by 134 runs as stumps were called, with wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav standing firm at the crease.

In the final hour of the second day's play, Jurel (30) and Yadav (17) exhibited sensible batting to thwart England's bowling assault, which had previously reduced India to a precarious 177/7.

India's innings got off to a shaky start when skipper Rohit Sharma (2) departed cheaply with just four runs on the board. However, in-form opener Yashasvi Jaiswal combined effectively with Shubman Gill to steady the ship.

The pair amassed 82 runs for the second wicket before Shoaib Bashir dismissed Gill lbw with a sharply spinning delivery. Gill contributed 38 runs, adorned with six boundaries.

Jaiswal then formed brief partnerships with Rajat Patidar (17) and Ravindra Jadeja (12) before succumbing in the final session.

At the start of play, England resumed their first innings at 302/7 with Joe Root and Ollie Robbinson at the crease. The duo continued from where they left off, asserting control until Jadeja broke the threatening partnership by dismissing Robbinson caught behind.

Robbinson's innings of 58 off 96 deliveries, embellished with 10 boundaries including a six, came to an end. His dismissal exposed England's batting tail, and Jadeja, riding on momentum, struck twice more in consecutive overs to bundle England out for 353.

England's batting stalwart Joe Root remained unbeaten with a gritty 122, featuring 10 boundaries.

Leading India's bowling charge, Ravindra Jadeja claimed four wickets, while debutant Akash Deep secured three scalps.
