Even though Rachin Ravindra is only 23 years old, he has already developed the habit of breaking records.
The New Zealand opener made history on Thursday in the ICC World Cup 2023 game against Sri Lanka by surpassing another landmark set by Sachin Tendulkar and making the most runs ever by a debutant in World Cup history.
With his 42-run knock, Ravindra overtook Quinton de Kock to take the top spot in the ODI World Cup 2023 run-scoring standings, while Virat Kohli came in third in the Golden Bat competition.
At Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Ravindra and Devon Conway gave New Zealand an explosive start as they pursued Sri Lanka's 172-run total. In his first World Cup, Rachin lit the stage on fire and accomplished a magnificent achievement against Sri Lanka.
England's Jonny Bairstow had set a record for most runs scored in a World Cup debut with 532 runs in 2019. However, on November 9, Ravindra overtook Bairstow's total with a 42-run performance.
However, Rachin Ravindra broke Bairstow's record and now has 565 runs in his first edition.
Not only that but in his brief career to date, Rachin has broken a few records held by Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. The 23-year-old broke the record for most runs scored by a player under 25 in a World Cup.
Tendulkar had scored 523 runs in the 1996 World Cup which was his debut World Cup in India colours, while Ravindra has aggregated more runs than Sachin while being under the age of 25.
Remember, New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets in the 41st match. The Black Caps' crucial win has made Pakistan's path to the World Cup — which was already difficult — nearly impossible as they require a massive win over England in their last match in Kolkata on November 11.
