Real Madrid provide new date for Santiago Bernabeu inauguration

Inauguration ceremony has been postponed - MARCA

Real Madrid anticipate the completion of their revamped Santiago Bernabeu stadium in the spring of next year.

As per The Athletic, the official unveiling is now slated to occur between late May and early June.

The stadium's overhaul began back in 2019, with the primary phase originally set to conclude by the close of 2023, as per Madrid's recent financial reports. Initially, there were intentions for an inauguration ceremony in December, but this has been postponed.

Real Madrid's last La Liga home fixture of the season is presently set for May 26. However, the club's revised inauguration plans encompass a series of events at the venue. This lineup includes performances by renowned artists Taylor Swift and Duki, confirmed for May 31 and June 8 respectively. Additionally, the club aims to organize one of their 'Corazon Classic' legends matches around this period.

In Madrid, there's an anticipation that the works most directly associated with the stadium will likely wrap up between March and April. However, pinpointing a final completion date is challenging due to concurrent off-site projects, such as a new Metro station and parking facilities linked to the stadium.

The club is still in the process of installing a new 360-degree video scoreboard, and several stadium entrances alongside its metal-slat façade are yet to be finished, among other pending tasks. The construction of the façade, in particular, has posed significant challenges.

Florentino Perez, the president of Madrid, highlighted during a club members' assembly on November 11 and a subsequent press event that delays and complications in the project have been worsened by "the pandemic and the war in Ukraine".

In November, members approved a new loan of €370 million (£322m, $391m) to cover additional expenses for the project, which now estimates the redevelopment of the stadium to cost the club at least €1.4 billion. Madrid is foreseeing increased revenue through hosting other sporting events, thanks to the introduction of retractable turf and roof.

Discussions for hosting an NFL game at the stadium in 2025 are also ongoing.
