Getafe are set to break the club’s most expensive transfer record after making a whopping £40m for Manchester United’s on-loan star Mason Greenwood, reported The Sun on Thursday.
The English international made a great return to the field after staying on the sidelines for over 18 months and heaped praise from his current team’s boss, Jose Bordalas.
With five goals and four assists across competitions in 15 appearances this season, Greenwood quickly emerged as a fan favourite and the club decided to make him a permanent part of their team.
As per The Sun, the Spanish club made £40m bid for the 21-year-old, which Man United have received. There has been no decision made by the 20-time Premier League champions so far.
Bordalas praised Greenwood’s patience and calmness as he fitted into the team without any effort and has become a key player now.
"Greenwood is a different player, with a lot of talent but in this football talent is not the main thing. It takes more work than talent. When he is at 100% we will be able to check his real level but he has the conditions to play in any major," he said.
"[He's fitted in the team due to] a lot of patience, with a lot of calm, aware that he had been unemployed for a long time without playing and practically without training. But we trusted because of the talent, because of the level that he has had.
"Being able to opt for a player of this level at Getafe is complicated, almost impossible. And well, given the situation, we bet on him. We are happy and content because we have a great player, he is a good boy, he has fitted in really well and he just needs to learn a little more Spanish."
It must be noted that United confirmed in August that Greenwood will not be continuing his career with them after a six-and-a-half-month investigation.
Even though the English club gave a clean chit to the player after their investigation, the internal conflict and the backlash from the fans forced the club to part ways with the 22-year-old.
Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape after his then-girlfriend Harriet Robson posted her pictures and an audio file on social media.
The footballer was then immediately suspended from training and matches by the club and last played for The Red Devils during the match against West Ham in January 2022.
