Real Madrid are scouring the transfer market for defensive reinforcements following a string of injuries throughout the season.

With both David Alaba and Eder Militao sidelined due to ACL injuries, alongside Nacho's recent disciplinary issues, the club appears poised to pursue a new centre-back in January.

A prominent name linked to a move to the Santiago Bernabeu is Manchester United star Raphael Varane. The Frenchman, who spent most of his career at Real Madrid, departing for United in 2021, holds an iconic status among the Madridistas.

Reports suggest that Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti is open to welcoming Varane back due to his proven track record and seamless adaptation to the club.

Now, AS reports that Varane himself is keen on returning to Real Madrid from Manchester United during the upcoming January transfer window. Allegedly, he's discontent with being benched by manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford and would view a move back to the Santiago Bernabeu positively.

Furthermore, it's suggested that Varane would consider a reduction in wages to facilitate his return to Valdebebas.

However, Real Madrid might encounter competition in their pursuit as German champions Bayern Munich also hold an interest in Varane. The Bavarians seek defensive reinforcements and see the Manchester United star as a viable option, willing to pay a fee ranging between €10-20 million.

Varane's contract with Manchester United extends until 2025, with the final year considered optional and reliant on mutual agreement between the player and the club.

At present, the World Cup-winning defender appears inclined toward an exit from Manchester United due to his situation under Ten Hag, leaving Real Madrid to take the initiative in the transfer proceedings.
