David Warner added another illustrious feat in his remarkable career and continued to prove why he is one of the greatest batters of all time during the second Test between Australia and Pakistan at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Tuesday.
Warner, 37, overtook the legendary Steve Waugh and became Australia’s second-highest run scorer in international cricket as he scored 38 runs against Pakistan.
The left-handed batter got a life early in the match as he was dropped on two runs by Abdullah Shafique, who stumbled on the first slip while taking a simple catch off Shaheen Afridi’s ball.
Warner played with caution after getting an early scare and accumulated 38 runs before becoming Salman Ali Agha’s victim, missing out on his half-century by 12 runs.
With 18,502 runs across formats in his 14-year-old career filled with history and greatness, the 37-year-old is only behind the two-time World Cup-winning captain, Ricky Ponting, who amassed 27,368 runs, a national record that is likely to remain unbeaten.
Warner went ahead of the likes of Waugh (18,496), Allan Border (17,698) and Michael Clarke (17,112).
Earlier, Australia reached 187-3 at stumps on the opening day of the second Test against Pakistan at MCG on Tuesday.
The Boxing Day Test was affected by rain which is why only 66 overs were bowled during the day.
The second Test between Pakistan and Australia resumed after a nearly three-hour-long rain delay.
It is worth mentioning that Pakistan suffered a heavy 360-run loss in the Perth Test and Shan Masood-led unit would be willing to do everything to win at MCG to avoid losing the series with one match still to go.
Pakistan have performed poorly in Australia, losing 15 Tests on the trot with their last win in 1995.
