Daniele De Rossi could make a return to his boyhood club after Roma sacked Jose Mourinho earlier today.
The legendary Giallorossi captain is currently the top contender to replace Mourinho, according to Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sport.
The managerial change could be fianlised after Roma’s expected final meeting with De Rossi later today. The agreement could be until the end of the season.
This will be De Rossi’s second coaching assignment after a brief stint at SPAL in Serie B.
It must be noted that Mourinho was named as the Giallorossi’s 60th coach in May 2021.
He led the team to win the Conference League in Tirana on May 25th, 2022, and to the Europa League final in Budapest last season.
“We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” said Dan and Ryan Friedkin.
“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.
“We wish José and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.”
The development comes after a poor start to the 2023-24 season, with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of AC Milan proving to be the final straw.
AS Roma are currently in ninth place in Serie A with eight wins in 20 matches.
"Further updates on the new First Team coaching staff will follow imminently," the Italian club's press release added.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager bagged 68 wins in 138 matches with Roma but was constantly part of disciplinary problems.
Just last week, Mourinho was sent off for the second match in a row after the violent Rome derby in which his team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Lazio.
Despite having the backing from majority of Roma supporters following their European success, Mourinho could only muster two sixth-place finishes after spending heavily in his first season at the club.
