Barcelona have informed Manchester United that they will not meet their €60 million (£51.3m) asking price for Mason Greenwood, Mundo Deportivo reported.

Greenwood was loaned to Getafe after United permitted the 22-year-old to depart Old Trafford in the closing hour of last summer’s transfer window.

The forward has not featured for United since his arrest in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, controlling behaviour, and assault.

All charges against Greenwood were dropped last February, and United had contemplated reintegrating him into Erik ten Hag’s squad. However, the club faced significant backlash over his potential return.

Earlier this week, Manchester United's football director, John Murtough, and head of football negotiations, Matt Hargreaves, met with Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, along with two agents from CAA Base, Frank Tramboli and Fede Massai, in Barcelona.

As per the publication, United initiated discussions regarding a potential deal for Greenwood and aimed to assess Barcelona's level of interest.

However, the report indicates that Barcelona has clearly stated they will not meet United's valuation, with the Premier League club seeking a fee ranging between €40m (£34.2m) and €60m (£51.3m).

It is understood that United's asking price exceeds Barcelona's budget, although the Spanish champions have been closely monitoring Greenwood's progress at Getafe.

United's new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has already hinted at the possibility of Greenwood's return and has stated that a new decision regarding the forward's future will be made.
