Lionel Messi is set to sit out at least seven matches for Inter Miami in the upcoming Major League Soccer (MLS) season. The Argentinian wrapped up his debut season with Miami in November, during which the team landed in 14th place in the Eastern Conference and missed out on the playoffs.

The 36-year-old netted 11 goals in 14 appearances after joining the club as a free agent in June, following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain.

The 2024 MLS season is scheduled to kick off in February, marking Messi's first full campaign in the United States. However, even before the season commences, Miami is aware that their star player will be absent for a minimum of seven games.

This absence stems from Messi's expected commitments with the Argentina national team throughout 2024. Consequently, Messi will be unavailable for Miami while representing his country in various matches.

The Copa America is scheduled for this summer, spanning June and July, where Messi aims to assist Argentina in securing another major title following their World Cup triumph in 2022.

Consequently, he will miss at least five MLS games for Miami during the tournament, spanning from June 15 to July 6, including matches against Philadelphia Union, Columbus Crew, Nashville SC, Charlotte FC, and FC Cincinnati.

Messi, alongside Argentina, will compete in three group games against Chile, Peru, and another team yet to qualify. The Copa America final is set for July 14, merely three days before Miami hosts Toronto at the DRV PNK Stadium in MLS.

Additionally, there's a possibility of Messi missing two early-season games for Miami in March, coinciding with a FIFA international break. The specific matches Argentina will play during this period are yet to be confirmed.

Earlier reports this year indicated discussions about Argentina playing friendly matches against European teams in March 2024. Although the opponents remain unconfirmed, reports from Argentina suggest possible matches against teams such as England, Portugal, Germany, France, or the Netherlands.

Consequently, if Argentina participates in these friendlies in March, Messi would miss two more MLS matches for Miami against DC United on March 16 and New York Red Bulls on March 23.

Messi will actively participate in Miami's pre-season campaign, featuring six games throughout February, including a face-off against Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr from the Saudi Pro League. This period serves as preparation for the MLS season's opening game on February 21 against Real Salt Lake.
