NZ must win their upcoming matches against Uganda and PNG by huge margin to stay in the tournament

New Zealand need to win their upcoming matches to qualify for the Super 8. -ICC

As New Zealand suffered a disappointing defeat by the West Indies today, the Black Caps now rely on other team's wins and losses to qualify for the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024.

The Caribbean side have already moved towards the tournament's Super 8 level, but for the Kiwis would need Afghanistan to lose its forthcoming matches against Papua New Guinea and West Indies to qualify.

Afghanistan's game with Papua New Guinea is on Friday (June 14), while it will face the Rovman Powell-led side on Tuesday (June 18).

Meanwhile, Afghanistan have already won two matches, with a net run rate of 5.225, while the Black Caps have not won a single match in the tournament so far with a net run rate of -2.425.

It is essential that New Zealand wins its upcoming matches against Uganda on Saturday (June 15) and with Papua New Guinea on Monday (June 17) by a huge margin to stay in the game.

Moreover, if Afghanistan lose its two matches by a combined margin of 120 runs, then New Zealand are required to win by a combined margin of 187 runs.

Nevertheless, if the Rashid Khan-led side manage to defeat PNG on Friday (June 14) or the match is hindered by rain, the New Zealand will have no chance of qualifying for the Super 8.
