Qatar Junior Open: Pakistan’s Rayyan Zaman qualifies for semi-final

Pakistan’s squash prodigy Rayyan Zaman qualified for the semi-final of the U11 event at the Qatar Junior Open in Doha on Tuesday.

Rayyan, son of former player Mansoor Zaman and grandson of the legendary Qamar Zaman, defeated Sultan Abdul Motaleb with the scores of 11-3/11-5/11-5 in a one-sided encounter which earned him a place in the semi-final of the event.

The 8-year-old will now take on Kuwait’s Salman Al Saleh who qualified for the semi-final after being given a walkover.

On the same day, another son of Mansoor Zaman, Abdullah Zaman, made his way to the U14 event’s quarter-final by beating USA’s Avik Ghosh with the scores of 11-8/11-6/11-6.

Abdullah, 14, will now face Malaysia’s Chen. J in the quarter-final on Wednesday.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for young Rayyan and Abdullah as they vie for victory in the ongoing championship, carrying forward a legacy within the realm of squash.

Remember, 10 Pakistani players are taking part in the tournament.

Saad Saeed and Abdul Moiz Khan in the under-19 category, Abdullah Zaman is featuring in the under-15 category, and Mamoon Khan and Aziz Ali under-13 category. The players who participated or are participating in the under-11 category are Mustafa Ahmad, Ahmed Ali, Hassan Zaman, Ayub Zaman, and Rayyan Zaman.

It must be noted that in December 2023, Rayyan finished as the runner-up at the 15th KL Junior Open International Squash Championship in Malaysia.
