FC Barcelona have made their plans for the next season and it begins with the departure of two players, Sergi Roberto and Marcos Alonso, reported SPORT on Tuesday.
Alonso arrived at Blaugrana in 2022 and has been struggling to get regular playing time as his role has been reduced to a bench player. His constant struggle with injuries and unsatisfactory display on the pitch forced Xavi Hernandez and his staff to refrain from trusting the Spaniard.
On the other hand, Sergi Roberto, a La Masia graduate who has been at the club since 2009, shared a similar fate as Alonso as he, too, has been finding it difficult to gain Xavi’s trust.
Both players are running out of contract in June 2024. Alonso is keen to find a new club in order to get regular playing time but Roberto has no intentions to leave the club and wants to play for another season, the report added.
The 31-year-old is already one of the lowest earners in the squad and despite that, he is willing to make another financial cut to continue his journey with his boyhood club.
Alonso’s departure is certain, both the club and the player want a way out as Barca would be easing their financial problems by letting the Spaniard go and the 32-year-old would get what he wants, playing time.
Atletico Madrid expressed interest in Alonso last summer and might consider him again in 2024. He also has potential options in the Premier League. Barcelona will communicate their decision to both players in January, allowing them ample time to explore opportunities with new clubs.
Meanwhile, Roberto's situation could hinge on the manager. Xavi has consistently spoken highly of Roberto and appreciates his leadership qualities off the field. If Xavi continues to be at the helm in the upcoming season, Roberto's financial constraints may be so minimal that Barcelona could choose to retain him.
