Former heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier suggested the “ideal” fight for Conor McGregor at the UFC 300 which is scheduled to take place on April 13, 2024, in the United States.
Cormier believed that the UFC 300 is missing a big fight as there has been no confirmation about McGregor’s next fight for the main event.
The American opined that a big fight shouldn’t just be two big names fighting, but there should be history behind it. He then went on to suggest Nate Diaz vs McGregor for the UFC 300 main event.
“What I will say about UFC 300, it’s missing a big fight,” Cormier said on DC & RC. “That big fight that it’s missing has to have a backstory. That big fight has to have bad blood. That big fight has to bring the eyeballs. So, it can’t be Belal Muhammad and Leon Edwards because it just doesn’t have enough to it. While it’s a fantastic fight, it doesn’t have enough to it for it to be the main event.”
“Regardless of who he would fight, the attraction comes with him,” Cormier said. “But if McGregor fights Diaz, that is what I believe draws the general fan in as much as anything that they could do in the UFC right now – just because of Nate Diaz and the intrigue, the way the first fight played out, the way the second fight played out. It is still two of the highest-grossing pay-per-views in UFC history.”
Diaz and McGregor faced each other in 2016, the American won their first fight with a second-round rear-naked choke while the Irishman defeated his counterpart in the rematch.
There had been talks about their trilogy ever since but that didn’t happen and Diaz retired from UFC in 2022. However, a comeback cannot be ruled out.
Earlier in January, Diaz posted an image of him and McGregor from their fight on X, formerly Twitter, where he captioned “Real war”.
Remember, McGregor announced at the start of 2024 that he would face Michael Chandler at the UFC 300 but UFC boss Dana White hasn’t confirmed it yet.
