Sunrisers Hyderabad secured a thrilling one-run victory over Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad and ascended to fourth place in the points table.
Chasing 202, Rajasthan fell short by a solitary run in a gripping chase. Despite suffering their second loss of the season, the Royals remain at the top the table.
Among the top four are the Kolkata Knight Riders, who occupy second place with six victories from nine games, and the Lucknow Super Giants, who climbed to third position after defeating Mumbai Indians on Tuesday.
IPL 2024 Points Table
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, SRH posted a modest 201/3 in 20 overs. While expectations were high for a Travis Head onslaught, it was local lad Nitish Kumar Reddy (76*) who propelled SRH to this total, supported by a brisk innings from Heinrich Klaasen (42*). But, Head's 58 off 44 deliveries set the tone for SRH.
In response, RR endured a disastrous start, losing two wickets in the opening over. However, this initial setback didn’t deter the RR batters.
Youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal (67) and Riyan Parag (79) steadied the innings, and at one stage, RR appeared poised for victory.
But, after SRH claimed these two wickets, RR attempted to regain control. Rovman Powell kept RR in contention until the very end. However, excellent bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar sealed a thrilling win for SRH and kept their playoff aspirations alive.
It must be noted Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are the joint-most successful teams in IPL history, with both sides clinching the title five times each.
Aside from these two, KKR has triumphed twice, while Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Deccan Chargers have each lifted the trophy once.
Despite boasting legendary figures in the shorter format such as Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers, Jacques Kallis, and others, Royal Challengers Bangalore have yet to claim the title despite reaching the final thrice in 2009, 2011, and 2016.
