Real Madrid remain on the hunt for the new long-term right-back, given that Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez are both 32 years of age.

Over the last couple of years, they have been linked with Chelsea captain Reece James, who would certainly fit the bill to hold the position for many years to come, given that he’s only 24.

James made his comeback to action on Saturday after five months sidelined with a hamstring injury, and provided an assist as Chelsea triumphed over Nottingham Forest 3-2. He showcased his quality on that occasion, and Real Madrid may well have taken notice.

According to Diario AS, Real Madrid have long held admiration for James and won’t make a move this summer as a right-back isn’t high on their list of priorities, but if the Englishman can put his injury woes behind him over the next 12 months, Los Blancos may look to make a move in 2025.

There’s no doubt that James would be a fantastic signing for Real Madrid, and he could arguably be the best option for them at right-back. The big question is over his injury record, but if that improves, it would surely pique the interest of club bosses.

Meanwhile, James has set a huge target for the 2024/25 season. Speaking to Chelsea TV after the win at Nottingham Forest, the defender stated that the Premier League giants must be back in the Champions League.

“We’re learning every day,” James said via The Standard. “We’re still young and during the season we’ve had a few off days, but on the whole, we’ve improved and we’re coming strong towards the end of the season.

“Europe is one of the highest levels in club football and we’re one of the biggest clubs in club football, so we want to be pushing each season to be knocking on the door for the Champions League. That’s the aim.”
