Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag’s future with the club is hanging by a thread as they prepare to face in-form Aston Villa in their 19th match of the Premier League (PL) at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
The 20-time PL champions are going through a rough patch as they have only managed to win one of their last seven games across competitions and have registered a number of unwanted records.
The board fully backed Ten Hag as he has spent around €440 million since taking charge of the club, €200 million of which were used only in the summer.
Man United have three defeats in their last four matches, failing to score in any of them for the first time since 1992.
They also suffered 13 losses in all competitions this season — their highest number of defeats before Christmas since 1930-31, a season where they finished at the bottom of the table.
Aston Villa are third in the league with 39 points from 18 matches, just one less than table-toppers Arsenal. And they have already proved their prowess by defeating Manchester City and the Gunners this season.
Ten Hag is aware that a loss tonight would make it nearly impossible for the fans to back him as United would be dropped to ninth if Brighton won their match.
They have also been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) after finishing bottom of their group. Time is passing and Ten Hag will need to find answers before the club's management and fans decide to go behind his back and demand the Dutchman's sacking, like they did with their previous managers from Jose Mourinho to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
It has to be mentioned that despite being one of the biggest clubs in the world, United last won a league title in 2013, which was the last season of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, while their last UCL win was in 2008, where they defeated Chelsea in the final.
